Military Affairs Council honors wing members Published Dec. 8, 2006 By Jacqueline Miller 45th Space Wing Public Affairs PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Three 45th Space Wing Airmen were honored recently by the Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council. First Lt. William Conway and Technical Sgt. Will McCormick, both of the 1st Space Launch Squadron, and Staff Sgt. Tamarshia Smith, 45th Medical Support Squadron, each received a MAC Community Service Award for their time donated to the community through organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Lieutenant Conway, Sergeant McCormick and Sergeant Smith were among 15 servicemembers from Patrick AFB and Cape Canaveral AFS nominated for the MAC awards. Each of the three winners were presented a certificate and a $500 savings bond by Kathi Schill, president/CEO of the Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.Lieutenant Conway volunteers at Indian River Community Hospital with Alzheimer's patients and provided six months of lawn care to the families of deployed service members. Sergeant McCormick trained 200 volunteers for the Patrick Air Force Base Airmen Against Drunk Driving program and led an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup function where a 25 member crew removed 400 pounds of trash from 2.5 miles of local highways. Sergeant Smith helped to make a family's dream come true of owning a home by donating time, work, and food to the Habitat for Humanity program. She also gave 12 hours a week making emergency notifications for military family members as an American Red Cross Emergency Service coordinator."When you have not heard from a loved one or you are a world away and a family member is hospitalized or sick it really brings home the importance of having someone you can turn to," said Sergeant Smith. "When you get that call at 2 or 3 in the morning, it is more like an honor than an inconvenience."
