PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Sexual Assault Awareness Month is observed nationally in April and provides the opportunity to reinforce our commitment to stopping this crime and to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, "As military professionals we must fully understand the destructive nature of these acts (sexual assault), lead our focused efforts to prevent them, and promote positive command climates and environments that reinforce mutual respect, trust, and confidence. Sexual assault among Service members is a problem we face together, and that can only be solved together".
The theme for SAAM this April is "We own it...We'll solve it...together."
This theme highlights the fact that sexual assault is a problem for our nation and for our military which will require sustained vigilance and a steadfast team effort to eradicate.
Unprecedented senior leader commitment must be matched by strong personnel commitments from every service member to treat each other with dignity and respect. We must collectively instill a climate that does not tolerate, condone, or ignore sexist behavior, sexual harassment, or sexual assault. The active role of commanders, leaders, and service members at every level is critical.
