PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Two esteemed British military bands, the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch and the Band of the Scots Guards, performed at the King Center for the Performing Arts March 23.
Brig. Gen. Anthony Cotton, 45th Space Wing commander, attended with his family. Chairman of the King Center Board and chief executive officer of Port Canaveral Stan Payne and his wife were also part of the official party. Members of the 45th Space Wing Honor Guard served as the color guard at the start of the performance.
Both military bands have a storied history. The Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch has participated in major world conflicts for nearly three centuries, and its celebrated pipes and drums have escorted troops into many famous battles, including Ticonderoga, Waterloo and the Second Gulf War.
Originally formed in 1642 by King Charles, the Band of the Scots Guards has entertained British troops serving in battles, including both World Wars. Beyond touring the globe, this respected 40-member orchestra performs at the daily Guard Mounting at Buckingham Palace and at various state functions throughout Britain.
