Patrick-Cape supports NDEAM, TRM awareness

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Held each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and Triple Ribbon Month are observed as part of a nationwide annual campaign to raise awareness.

The purpose of NDEAM is to educate people about disability employment and celebrate the many contributions of America's workers with disabilities. The 2014 theme is: "Expect. Employ. Empower."

The thought provoking message reminds us that the advancement of disability employment is about more than just hiring, it's about creating a continuum of inclusion.

In addition to NDEAM, Team Patrick-Cape observes Triple Ribbon Month.

Triple Ribbon Month is a means of raising awareness about three key issues and recognizes struggles, pays homage to survivors of substance abuse, domestic violence, and breast cancer.

All three ribbons have significant meaning.

The 2014 Red Ribbon theme is: "Love Yourself. Be Drug Free." It is the nation's largest and oldest drug prevention campaign that encourages our youth and adults to follow the same principles of living a life free of substance abuse.

The purple ribbon is for domestic violence awareness. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence sponsors the observance and works to provide support programs for battered women of all demographics in hopes of eradicating social conditions which contribute to domestic violence.

The pink ribbon is an international symbol for breast cancer awareness and is worn to honor survivors, remember those lost, and support the progress we are making in the fight against breast cancer.

As we pay tribute to the four campaigns, Team Patrick-Cape and the community are invited, encouraged to participate in events, get involved, and pay their respects.

Team Patrick-Cape is encouraged to enhance awareness through educational activities and by wearing one, or, a combination of the ribbons that have become symbols for each cause.

"There is a native American saying, 'Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand,'" said Col. Julie Stola, 45th Medical Group commander.
