AFPSC commander sends Memorial Day safety message Published May 21, 2014 By Gen. William Shelton Air Force Space Command Commander PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Memorial Day weekend is the first big weekend of the summer. It is my hope that this Memorial Day finds you and your families safe, healthy and happy, which is why this year's AFSPC Critical Days of Summer goal is zero fatalities. One life lost, one severe injury, is too much. In order to heighten safety awareness during the summer months, the Air Force Chief of Staff established the Critical Days of Summer (CDS) Campaign between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Historically, the biggest safety hazard during the CDS is associated with operating a motor vehicle, but other seasonal outdoor activities still pose a risk. Regrettably, last summer we lost 18 active-duty Airmen Air Force wide, with 15 being attributed to motor vehicle mishaps--including nine motorcyclists. Unfortunately, most were preventable. In the end, the key to having a safe and fun summer is your personal commitment--accept no unwarranted risks and be a good wingman. Stay focused on safety, and whether at home or on vacation, be aware of the hazards and risks and take the proper precautions. Thank you for your service, and Linda and I wish you a safe and enjoyable summer!
