PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Patrick Space Force Base, Fla. – The Space Launch Delta 45 Information Protection Office has reached a historic milestone, earning the 2024 Department of the Air Force Annual Security Community – Outstanding Installation Information Protection, Special Security or Special Programs Office Award. This coveted honor marks a first for a Space Force organization, recognizing SLD 45/IP’s outstanding contributions to safeguarding national security assets and enabling critical space operations.
This award represents the pinnacle of achievement within the Department of the Air Force’s security enterprise. Competing against elite teams from 10 Air Force Major Commands and all three Space Force Field Commands, SLD 45/IP emerged as the best of the best. The selection process is highly competitive, with teams required to first secure top honors at their respective FIELDCOM or MAJCOM levels before advancing to the final Air Force-wide evaluation.
“This award is the culmination of my 16-year career as a civil servant for the Department of the Air Force,” said Steven M. Martinez, Chief of the Information Protection Office. “It highlights what I already knew – we were able to assemble a truly outstanding group of security professionals who will do whatever it takes to ensure mission success.”
Navigating the demands of a high-tempo operational environment, SLD 45/IP tackled challenges head-on, from managing classified information to ensuring the resiliency of Eastern Range operations. The team’s excellence was not built overnight. It was forged through collaboration, professionalism, and relentless attention to detail. “The team’s success was rooted in their collaborative spirit and the expertise of each member,” Martinez added.
Comprising six highly skilled, driven, and proactive professionals, the Information Protection Office embodies excellence. Their achievements were bolstered by strong backing from senior leadership and a clear focus on mission impact. The effects of their work reverberate far beyond Patrick Space Force Base. SLD 45/IP’s efforts secure classified operations across the Eastern Range, enhance operational readiness, and protect critical infrastructure—ultimately strengthening the nation’s access to space.
Looking to the future, Martinez is committed to building on this success by developing the next generation of security leaders. “Striving for excellence and preparing future security professionals and leaders is my goal, so when it is my time to step down and retire, the future is in capable hands.”
His advice for others in the security field is simple, yet profound: “Try to make a positive impact each day, regardless of the situation. Always do the right thing and make an effort to build bridges, not tear them down, to be successful in any career.”
The accomplishments of the SLD 45/IP team serve as a beacon for the entire Department of the Air Force security community—demonstrating that with dedication, integrity, and teamwork, mission success is not only possible but inevitable.
