Three Sharks to compete in marathon Published Aug. 9, 2007 By Jacqueline Miller 45 SW Public Affairs PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Three athletes from Patrick are lacing up their sneakers to participate in the 11th Annual Air Force Marathon Sept. 15 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. This year's marathon events include the marathon, a wheelchair marathon, a four-person relay and a half marathon. All three of the athletes, assigned to the 45th Space Wing Staff Judge Advocate Office, will participate in the half marathon. There are different reasons why Tech. Sgt. Dawn Wolfe and Staff Sgts. Lasasha Woods and April Hutchinson are participating. All three are hitting the pavement three to four times a week to prepare for the 13.1-mile race. For Sergeant Wolfe, an avid runner and veteran of three marathons, it is merely a practice run before participating in the Marine Corps Marathon, Oct. 28 in Arlington, Va. "I'm more concerned with my time than anything else," said Sergeant Wolfe. "I would like to run in the Boston Marathon one day." Sergeant Woods is excited about participating mainly for the self gratification of it. She says she runs for herself and says the camaraderie of the run is what motivates her to keep going before she hits her stride. "Once you get past the first one to five miles, you kind of go into auto-pilot." Sergeant Hutchinson is entering because she wants to see her potential. "I just want to see if I can do it," said Sergeant Hutchinson's. "It's always been a goal of mine." The Air Force Marathon is held in September to commemorate the founding of the Air Force as a separate military service, which took place Sept. 18, 1947.
