Astronaut Rescue Exercise

Maj. Chris Slauson, 45th Operations Group Detachment 3, discusses radio operations with Master Sgt. Jesse Stoda, 308th Rescue Squadron, aboard an Alaska Air National Guard C-17 Globemaster III Jan. 14 at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. The Airmen worked together during a training event to exercise the capability of Pararescue personnel jumping out of C-17s to rescue distressed astronauts in the Atlantic Ocean. Their goal was to verify radio transmission and reception distances between the airborne aircraft and the astronaut in the water. Det. 3, the Department of Defense's Human Space Flight Support Office, is the only Air Force staff that coordinates and trains personnel to support human spaceflight contingencies. Det. 3 supports all NASA human spaceflight missions, including Soyuz, Commercial Crew, and Orion. (U.S Air Force photo/Chrissy Cuttita) (Released)
